Painting My Furniture White

Hello friends, it’s late but I just got home from work a little while ago and you know how that is…takes a while to unwind for me. So I thought I’d show you my very first piece of furniture that I have painted white. I was putting the first coat on when I remembered to take a picture. You can tell by the legs that it was a barn red, I painted it Clean White by Valspar Premium which has a primer in it. I’m not experienced in this but I do know that I’ll never buy it again, it took five coats to cover it!!!

Sorry about the pictures but it’s night time and with the flash it was just to harsh looking. I love the legs of this piece, I found it a few years ago at our annual community yardsale for $25.00!

The foot of it, very dainty!

The drawers that are on either side!

I’d love to find some French letters to put in these letter holders, I’m really lovin the white!

The top of it lifts up and I just put some stuff on the top for the photos. I’m going to add some glass knobs when I  find some I think it would make it more shabby looking.

Please, if you have any suggestions on painting or on how you would decorate this I’d love to hear. Remember I’m a babe in the woods here with this style.LOL  I think I’ll be painting the chair white as well!

All in all it wasn’t to bad to do but like I said I’m such a newbie when it comes to this white style but one thing I know I love it. When I walked in from work tonight my livingroom was so much lighter and prettier. I know I have alot of work ahead of me but looking at all the fabulous blogs out in blogland, I know it will be worth it♥
I’m linking for the first time to each of these great blogs:
Faded Charm and Domestically Speaking stop by each one, you won’t be disappointed at all!!!
Just added…I finally found my permalink, next time I link up I’ll at least no how:)

Aww great job Rondell! But yea, next time you would definitely need to prime it. Especially red. I have done that too because I was lazy and didn't want to prime, and I really was hatin' life that day with all the coats. :)

Love your new white desk, it's beautiful!

Rondell,
I love your desk painted white! Do you have a Hobby Lobby near you? They have some wonderful knobs there...our store has many that have the shabby chic feel to them.
I want to start painting some of my pieces white and can't seem to get brave enough. I have a chair, a wood chest, and some other small items that I know I want to be white. Guess I should just go for it...I visit all these blogs with white and I just love the look and feel of it!!

O, you did a WONDERFUL job on this beautiful desk. I just love it.
I want to paint some of my black furniture white so bad. Just dread doing it, I guess.
I did get some new thrifted chairs for my dining room and it made all the difference in the world. Just as you said, it brightened and lightened my entire room.
Wish you lived next door and we could do it together! :))

I think your desk turned out very nice.
You did a good job. It might have taken less coats if you had used a primer such as kilz. It comes in a spray or can. I haven't had much luck with Valspar. I prefer Benjamin and Moore or Behr paint. It just seems to coat better.
Before long you will be painting evreything in sight!

Maybe using a primer first may have worked better. Also, did you sand and prep it? It's harder to cover up dark colors with white. My daughter's room was a bright green and purple. It was hard to cover up with white. I think it took 2 coats of primer and 2 of paint. Your desk looks very nice though!

Rondell, great job for the first time. I have not ever tried one of those paint primer mixes because I have heard people have not been too pleased with them. I use regular primer first, usually Kilz. Sometimes it takes two coats of primer. Sand lightly between each coat. I use a foam roller on the large surfaces for a smooth finish and a brush in the small spots. If you want to age it just sand some places like the edges and where it might normally wear and then use a glaze over it and then wipe it back off leaving a little or taking most back off. You just have to play with it till you get the look you want. I have been working on a piece for days now.

Hi Rondell, I like your new decorating style. I am in love with many decorating styles. I still love primitive but I also love French Country and Shabby Chic. I like the piece of furniture you started with. I am going to start looking for cool older pieces of furniture at yard sales and flea markets. They have such character.

I love that pretty desk. I can't help too much in the painting, as I'm new at it too. The one piece I've done recently was an oak color, and I sanded, primed and then painted it with two coats. So it was 3 coats altogether. Thanks so much for stopping by and saying hi. You have a very nice blog. I'm joining to follow so I can see what you do next :-)
Blessings,
Marcia

Hi rondell, The desk looks amazing. I have so many things to paint, but its one of my less favourite jobs, I should just tackle because the end result is worth it. will be popping back to see what else you do. Have a great week.

What a great piece, small enough that it could be moved to a variety of areas in a home and look wonderful wherever it was moved.

Simply beautiful make over! I've even cheated and used 'spray' primer after a little elbow grease of sanding! It's amazing how white will just brighten up a room. I've even noticed (after I painted everything white), how soothing it feels the moment I walk through the door! Thanks for visiting my blog! Debbie @ Cottage Hann~Me~Downs

Hi Rondell!!! Your desk is sooooo cute! I love it in white! Yep..glass knobs would look nice.
I used the Behr paint with primer on my chairs..but wasn't happy. I should have just primed with Kilz first.
Only suggestion I can make, is maybe a vintage lamp with a white, or small floral shade.
Great Job!!!!!
